Après des débuts où on la sentait calibrée pour devenir une nouvelle bimbo éphémère de la country pop, Ashley Monroe a vite prouvé qu’elle avait une certaine personnalité, avançant parfois hors des sentiers lisses tracés par les canons de Nashville. Ainsi, la chanteuse de Knoxville, Tennessee, s’est retrouvée à croiser le fer avec Jack White et ses Raconteurs et même à former les Pistol Annies avec Angaleena Presley et Miranda Lambert. Avec The Blade, son troisième album de 2015, elle confirmait la large palette artistique qu’elle maîtrisait, qu’il s’agisse de sa voix ou de l’instrumentarium choisi. Sans révolutionner le genre, Monroe signait un disque joliment troussé de country contemporaine regorgeant de mélodies efficaces et offrant surtout une voix d'une pureté bluffante, inspirée par les intouchables Dolly Parton et Emmylou Harris... Trois ans plus tard, Sparrow montre une artiste de plus en plus aventureuse, ne cherchant jamais à caresser les charts dans le sens du poil. Produit par l'excellent Dave Cobb, à qui l'on doit des albums de Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, Shooter Jennings, Colter Wall, Zac Brown Band et Jason Isbell, ce quatrième opus veut embarquer la country sur des sentiers empruntés par le passé par des gens de goût comme Bobbie Gentry, Glen Campbell, Waylon Jennings, Rick Hall, Shelby Lynne voire le Elton John des débuts. Ainsi, Sparrow n’est pas un disque de country pop actuel mais plutôt à l’ancienne. Ou, plus précisément, intemporel. Le travail de Cobb est d’ailleurs admirable dans sa propension à flouter voire gommer les signes de l’époque…

« Ce disque parle de l’acceptation des maux du passé, de pardon et de liberté pour, au final, aller de l’avant. Les choses les plus terribles qui peuvent vous arriver dans la vie donnent souvent les plus belles chansons. Et c'est ce que je respecte le plus en musique. » Ashley Monroe abat donc ici la carte de la thérapie. Elle a beau régler certains comptes avec sa mère, voire avec elle-même, se repasser le film de sa jeunesse, son album est introspectif mais touche tout le monde. Car comme Alison Krauss, Lee Ann Womack ou, plus proche d’elle, Kacey Musgraves, elle connaît le potentiel émotionnel et lacrymale de cette matière à pathos mais reste toujours digne, sereine et vraiment classe. C’est d’ailleurs la grande force d’un disque qui ne lésine parfois pas sur les violons mais les manipule comme on transporterait de la nitroglycérine. Chaudement recommandé. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
