Oui, il s’agit bien de l’intégrale de l’œuvre pour piano de Sibelius, si l’on excepte quelques rares adaptations ou réductions de pièces originalement conçues pour d’autres effectifs. Le pianiste finlandais Janne Mertanen (entre autres « Grand Prix du Disque Frédéric Chopin » de Varsovie pour ses enregistrements des Nocturnes dudit Chopin) propose ici de faire découvrir l’énigmatique compositeur national par son répertoire le moins connu, qui couvre pourtant toute sa vie créatrice, de 1893 à sa retraite de la scène musicale en 1929. Sibelius y aura consigné ses états d’âme les plus secrets, les plus intimes, mais ce sera aussi parfois son bac à sable ou son laboratoire de préparation – on pense aux Pièces lyriques Op. 74 précédant de peu la Cinquième symphonie, ou les Cinq pièces romantiques Op. 101 juste avant les Sixième et Septième ; quant aux Cinq esquisses Op. 114 de 1929, peut-être préfiguraient-elles la Huitième symphonie détruite par le compositeur... En bref, l’aimable Qobuzonaute l’aura saisi, l’on comprendra peut-être encore mieux le grand Sibelius symphoniste après avoir écouté toutes ses œuvres pour piano, bien à tort considérées comme un répertoire mineur. © SM/Qobuz
