Ses fans attendaient un nouvel album depuis sept ans mais Woodkid n’est pas un homme pressé. Le musicien/réalisateur/graphiste a d’abord tranquillement récolté les fruits de son premier LP The Golden Age, signant un clip pour Rihanna, une BO de film (Desierto de Jonas Cuaron, le fils de), des productions pour d’autres artistes (l’album Mykki de Mykki Blanco), ou la musique des défilés Vuitton. Puis, il s’est questionné sur “la responsabilité collective et individuelle dans la création d’un monde au bord de la rupture”, aboutissant à ce second long format assez solennel, qu’il compare à un “thriller de science-fiction”. La première chose que l’on note, c’est la voix de Woodkid. Travaillée tous les jours avec un coach, elle a gagné en hauteur et en épaisseur, et ça s’entend sur le mélancolique Shift, composé dans la période post-attentats de 2015 à Paris, ou sur Horizons Into Battlegrounds, sur lequel le Français prend des accents à la Nick Cave. L’instrumentarium est toujours partagé entre orchestre symphonique (“moins emphatique et moins hollywoodien”, dixit l’artiste) et logiciels de MAO, se faisant lyrique sur Reactor, métallique sur Highway 27, et grandiose sur le single Goliath, véritable titre signature. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Descriptif de l'album

Ses fans attendaient un nouvel album depuis sept ans mais Woodkid n’est pas un homme pressé. Le musicien/réalisateur/graphiste a d’abord tranquillement récolté les fruits de son premier LP The Golden Age, signant un clip pour Rihanna, une BO de film (Desierto de Jonas Cuaron, le fils de), des productions pour d’autres artistes (l’album Mykki de Mykki Blanco), ou la musique des défilés Vuitton. Puis, il s’est questionné sur “la responsabilité collective et individuelle dans la création d’un monde au bord de la rupture”, aboutissant à ce second long format assez solennel, qu’il compare à un “thriller de science-fiction”. La première chose que l’on note, c’est la voix de Woodkid. Travaillée tous les jours avec un coach, elle a gagné en hauteur et en épaisseur, et ça s’entend sur le mélancolique Shift, composé dans la période post-attentats de 2015 à Paris, ou sur Horizons Into Battlegrounds, sur lequel le Français prend des accents à la Nick Cave. L’instrumentarium est toujours partagé entre orchestre symphonique (“moins emphatique et moins hollywoodien”, dixit l’artiste) et logiciels de MAO, se faisant lyrique sur Reactor, métallique sur Highway 27, et grandiose sur le single Goliath, véritable titre signature. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Un nouveau monde entre électro et classique

Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama… Depuis quelques années, tous ces noms en vogue ont été regroupés sous la vaste et imprécise étiquette “néoclassique”. A dire vrai, cette “scène” ressemble plutôt à une bande hétéroclite d’artistes fureteurs qui mêlent instruments classiques et production électronique – avec une connexion assumée aux pionniers du minimalisme américain – régalant les sens et ouvrant des perspectives des deux côtés de leur spectre musical.

Daniel Johnston, icône troublée et troublante

Personne ne sonne comme Daniel Johnston. Artiste dépressif et méconnu devenu culte grâce à la reconnaissance de ses pairs, l’Américain, mort le 11 septembre 2019 à l’âge de 58 ans, est le symbole d’une musique naïve, lo-fi mais débordant d’émotions. Il n’est pas trop tard pour (re)découvrir cet authentique génie underground qui ne rate jamais le cœur de l’auditeur.

Blues touareg, l’oasis du rock

Depuis la sortie en 2002 du premier album officiel du groupe touareg Tinariwen, “The Radio Tisdas Sessions”, leur musique électrique dominée par les guitares est devenue une catégorie de rock, reconnue et respectée de Bamako à Los Angeles. Ce succès international a permis à de nombreux musiciens originaires du Sahara de se faire connaître. Ces poètes électriques des dunes de sable et des étendues rocailleuses ne cessent d’attirer les rockers occidentaux en quête d’authenticité rebelle.
