Le public comme la presse sont encore sous le choc de Wild Life, le premier album que Paul McCartney a sorti en décembre 1971 avec son nouveau groupe les Wings. Un disque incendié car jugé très inconsistant… Deux ans plus tard, Macca publie Red Rose Speedway, œuvre nettement plus chatoyante voire avenante, au point qu’il retrouve le sommet des charts, notamment grâce au single My Love. Comme sur Wild Life, le chanteur-bassiste s’est entouré ici de sa femme Linda aux claviers, de l’ex-guitariste des Moody Blues Denny Laine et du batteur Denny Seiwell. Un trio auquel il a adjoint Henry McCullough, ex-guitariste du groupe Spooky Tooth.
Même si certains critiques reprochent une fois de plus à Paul McCartney d’être toujours trop léger, pas assez engagé et surtout bien en deçà de ses compositions passées, on salue la finesse de certaines de ses mélodies et sa capacité à écrire des refrains qui font mouche. Une fois de plus, l’éclectisme du répertoire est parfois déroutant, rendant difficile d’appréhender Red Rose Speedway comme une réelle entité artistique. Mais certaines compositions sont réellement touchantes, à l’image de Little Lamb Dragonfly et Single Pigeon. Cette édition deluxe avec remastérisation et nombreux bonus est l’occasion de redécouvrir une pièce supplémentaire pour mieux cerner le grand puzzle Paul McCartney. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
