Stéphane Denève led the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR (or "SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra") during what turned out to be the final period of the orchestra's existence. Denève took up the baton as chief conductor in 2011, but the following year, the governing body of the SWR decided to merge the Stuttgart orchestra with the SWR Baden-Baden and Freiburg Symphony to create the SWR Symphonieorchester. The recordings in this survey of Ravel's works for orchestra are from October 2012, mere months after the vote in favor of the merger, to December 2015, less than a year before the orchestra's final performance, which came at the BBC Proms under conductor laureate Roger Norrington. The music of Denève's compatriot fits neatly into the strengths of the Stuttgart orchestra, which was more inclined to modern and contemporary fare, along with staples of the Classical and Romantic eras, and he extracts thrilling, vibrant, yet delicate readings, naturally suitable to Ravel's style. The first three discs are orchestra-only works, containing the composer's most popular pieces in the genre, such as the Boléro, Pavane pour une infante défunte, and the Valses nobles et sentimentales. The final two discs contain the composer's two operas, his three Shéhérazade poems, and the Ma mère l'oye suite in its orchestrated version. Stéphanie d'Oustrac is the soloist for Shéhérazade and is part of the cast for the opera L'heure espagnole. Other notable performers are Paul Gay, who appears in both operas, and Camille Poul as the lead in L'enfant et les sortilèges, which also features the SWR Vokalensemble. A testament to the musicians of the now-defunct orchestra and a postcard for fans who were unable to change management's mind.
