De retour, après Tommy, dans le créneau, sinon de l’opéra rock, tout du moins dans celui de l’album conceptuel, Pete Townshend ne choisit pas vraiment la facilité, évoquant la lente maturation d’un mod, des bagarres sanglantes sur la plage de Brighton, à l’accession à l’âge de raison, et donc se penchant sur sa propre histoire.
On peut en conséquence penser que cette épopée, dans laquelle Jimmy (jeune garçon qui, en cours de traitement psychiatrique, voit sa schizophrénie se dédoubler, et se transformer en quadrophénie), en personnage principal, incarne peu ou prou les grandes caractéristiques des quatre individus qui constituent The Who,, se situait trop près de l’os de sa propre sensibilité, pour que le compositeur en ressorte tout à fait intact. A telle enseigne que, contraint sur scène, par la complexité de l’intrigue, à s’interrompre entre chaque morceau pour expliciter la suite, le groupe finit par ne plus recueillir que l’exaspération du public.
Et, comme pour Tommy, par delà certaine confusion dans la narration, il reste de grandes chansons (« The Real Me », « 5 : 15 », « Love, Reign O’er Me »), qui se suffisent amplement à elles-même. Chris Stainton (directeur musical de Joe Cocker) est venu amicalement prêter son piano, le bassiste John Entwistle assure de manière impeccable les parties de cuivres, et la production (en particulier la sonorité des synthétiseurs), reste l’une des plus inventives du rock.
Quadrophenia atteindra la deuxième place des charts britanniques et américains, et « The Real Me », « 5 :15 » et « Love, Reign O’er Me » en seront les singles.
