Sorti en 1983, Pyromania est un classique du metal des années 80. Def Leppard est pris en main par Robert John "Mutt" Lange qui leur confectionne un son sur mesure, entre AC/DC et Van Halen.
Leur hard-rock est hard par le son mais rock par son essence, le groupe se souvient de ses débuts où il disputait la scène aux groupes punk, il fallait alors aux adolescents de Sheffield une bonne dose d'énergie pour éjecter leurs concurrents des circuits alternatifs. Dans le cas de Def Leppard, il convient de ne pas mésestimer l'apport du glam rock, qui a bercé leur adolescence, le groupe en garde la propension à composer des hymnes faciles à être repris en choeur.
« Rock Rock ('Til You Drop) », « Billy 's Got a Gun » étrangement proche de Generation X, sont bien des hymnes. La force de Def Leppard c'est d'avoir en plus un sens mélodique rare, illustré par « Photograph», titre proche du hard FM alourdi. Il ne peut y avoir de grand album de hard sans morceau de bravoure, ici c'est « Die hard the Hunter» et sa hargne qui remplissent l'office. Rock, hard, glam, mélodies, énergie, en réunissant ces ingrédients et en gagnant les faveurs de MTV, Def Leppard est intronisé parmi les grands et Pyromania postule au titre de classique.
