Ce n’est certes pas là un album exclusivement vocal, mais une large partie en est dévolue à la somptueuse mezzo-soprano anglaise Sarah Connolly et la non moins somptueuse soprano galloise Rosemary Joshua – toutes deux la très, très glorieuse cinquantaine et encore toutes leurs dents vocales, en pleine possession de leurs moyens et dont les voix ont pris en boisé au cours des ans, comme de grands crus ! Les deux dames se partagent des airs et duos de Purcell et de Locke, issus pour certains d’opéras ou musiques de scènes connus ou moins connus (l’extraordinaire Musick for a While d’Oedipus ou la déchirante Plaint de The Fairy Queen de Purcell), d’autre étant de petites perles isolées – de grands diamants, en vérité – comme O Solitude ou Oh! Fair Cedaria, Hide Those Eyes, les véritables ancêtres du artsong à l’anglaise. On remarquera aussi la délicieuse musique de scène que Locke a écrite pour une version lyrique de La Tempête de Shakespeare établie par le dramaturge Thomas Shadwell, un demi-siècle après la mort du Barde de Stratford. Notons enfin qu’il s’agit là d’un enregistrement réalisé en concert public, et au cours duquel les deux grandes dames du chant outre-Manche étaient accompagnées par The English Concert menés par Harry Bicket, la crème de la crème des ensembles baroques d’aujourd’hui. © SM/Qobuz
