Coming off of the success of "Super Gremlin," one of his biggest charting hits to date, Florida rapper Kodak Black mines heartache and angst on fifth studio album Pistolz & Pearlz. The album's production sticks largely to minimal trap with occasional echoes of the mournful atmospheres of Kanye West's 2008 touchstone 808s & Heartbreak. With over 20 tracks, Pistolz & Pearlz runs on for more than an hour, Kodak being joined occasionally by other artists on tracks like "Dirt McGirk," when EST Gee and Lil Crix drop by, and group track "Church on Saturday," which features contributions from WizDaWizard, Syko Bob, and Wam SpinThaBin. While Kodak Black musters up a few respectable moments throughout the course of the album (the pained, heart-heavy piano and emo verses of "No Love for a Thug" are serviceable for by-the-numbers breakup rap and "Gunsmoke Town" has some energy), the majority of Pistolz & Pearlz's bloated tracklisting is lazy, boring, and bored. The titular opening track is laughably bad, moving from a cut-rate Lil Wayne impression to a truly confusing mumbly outro that seems like someone in Kodak's management should have told him to leave off of the song. The bulk of the album feels unfinished or unthought to some degree, with its best tracks merely checking all the boxes for what a formulaic commercial rap song should sound like in 2023, and the weaker entries failing to cover even that bare minimum.
