D'un virtuose, le public attend l'excellence. C'est particulièrement vrai pour Jeff Beck qui fait de la virtuosité sa marque de fabrique. Ses derniers albums studio, Who Else ! et Jeff en particulier, sont de plus marqués du sceau de l'innovation. Jeff Beck loin de la nostalgie récurrente de ses pairs a su s'adapter au monde de l'électronique. La principale déception de ce Live At Ronnie Scott's vient du choix du répertoire. Si trois titres viennent de Who Else !, « Blast From the East », « Brush With the Blues » marié ici avec « Goodbye Pork Pie Hat », et « Angel (Footsteps) », seul « Nadia » provient de You Had it Coming - mais aucun du sublime Jeff. Bien sûr les autres titres sont majoritairement des classiques issus de son répertoire, mais interprétés comme s'ils sortaient de Blow by Blow ou Wired. Ce choix forcément délibéré d'une tonalité jazz rock réjouira les fans du genre, mais laisse sur sa faim quand on connait la diversité du jeu et des sonorités dont est capable EL Becko. Ce point évacué, Live At Ronnie Scott's est un album en public agréable mais trop timoré. Là ce sont les musiciens qui sont en cause, ils assurent leur partition sans toutefois pousser Jeff Beck à aller plus loin. Les chevauchées sont trop contrôlées, les jams bien sages. Du bon Jeff Beck forcément, du grand Jeff Beck pas tout à fait. La version DVD risque d'être plus interressante, elle offre la possibilité de voir Jeff Beck à l'oeuvre dans l'intimité d'un club. Observer une des rares légendes du rock encore réellement en activité créatrice, jouer à quelques mètres de sa table n'est pas donné à tout le monde. Un plaisir à ne surtout pas bouder.
