C’est le chef d’œuvre d’Otis Redding (à la réserve d’une infamante habitude, héritée de certaines collections de disques de jazz, de faire figurer sur la photo du recto le cliché d’une jeune femme blonde, totalement hors sujet, même si conséquence directe du désir d’attaquer le marché blanc).
Troisième album du chanteur, Otis Blue… est le premier à être abordé par toute l’équipe Stax (crédité intégralement dans les notes de pochette comme producteur) comme une entité à part entière, et non plus une collection de singles réalisés auparavant. En outre, les qualités d’interprète de Redding lui permettent de chanter à peu près n’importe quoi : la grandeur du projet reste que les chansons retenues représentent, justement, tout, sauf n’importe quoi. En hommage à Sam Cooke, idole du Sudiste et récemment assassiné, trois chansons sont mises en exergue, comme autant de pages essentielles de la soul music : « A Change is Gonna Come », prophétique et définitif, l’endiablé « Shake » et « Wonderful World ».
« Satisfaction », des Rolling Stones, controversée par les puristes, qui y décelaient une possible trahison des canons du genre, démontre dès les premières mesures que les spécialistes devraient, parfois, se taire. « My Girl » (seul emprunt répertorié de Stax au répertoire de la Motown) fut un hit pour les Temptations, ce sera également le cas pour Otis. « Respect » sera quelques mois plus tard repris par Aretha Franklin (qui en fera un numéro un) et « I’Ve Been Loving You Too Long » rejoindra instantanément le Panthéon des ballades souls. Quant à un « Rock Me Baby » emprunté au répertoire de B.B. King, elle est l’occasion, pour Steve Cropper, d’enregistrer ce qui reste sans nul doute comme son plus définitif solo de guitare. Et citer la version du « You Don’t Miss Your Water » de William Bell (tout le monde a chanté cela, jusqu’aux Byrds) serait finalement injuste pour les chansons restantes. Car, merveilleusement épaulé par Booker T. & the MG’s, Isaac Hayes et les cuivres des Mar-Keys, Redding s’impose tout du long comme un chanteur au riche nuancier, et comme la figure tutélaire du genre.
Otis Blue : Otis Redding Sings Soul atteignit la première place des classements de vente de musique noire, et, en 1966, la 75ème position des hit parades pop. « Respect », « Shake » et « I’ve Been Loving You Too Long », exploités en singles, seront tous trois des tubes. Cet album reste essentiel dans une discothèque raisonnée.

Chronique
C’est le chef d’œuvre d’Otis Redding (à la réserve d’une infamante habitude, héritée de certaines collections de disques de jazz, de faire figurer sur la photo du recto le cliché d’une jeune femme blonde, totalement hors sujet, même si conséquence directe du désir d’attaquer le marché blanc).
Troisième album du chanteur, Otis Blue… est le premier à être abordé par toute l’équipe Stax (crédité intégralement dans les notes de pochette comme producteur) comme une entité à part entière, et non plus une collection de singles réalisés auparavant. En outre, les qualités d’interprète de Redding lui permettent de chanter à peu près n’importe quoi : la grandeur du projet reste que les chansons retenues représentent, justement, tout, sauf n’importe quoi. En hommage à Sam Cooke, idole du Sudiste et récemment assassiné, trois chansons sont mises en exergue, comme autant de pages essentielles de la soul music : « A Change is Gonna Come », prophétique et définitif, l’endiablé « Shake » et « Wonderful World ».
« Satisfaction », des Rolling Stones, controversée par les puristes, qui y décelaient une possible trahison des canons du genre, démontre dès les premières mesures que les spécialistes devraient, parfois, se taire. « My Girl » (seul emprunt répertorié de Stax au répertoire de la Motown) fut un hit pour les Temptations, ce sera également le cas pour Otis. « Respect » sera quelques mois plus tard repris par Aretha Franklin (qui en fera un numéro un) et « I’Ve Been Loving You Too Long » rejoindra instantanément le Panthéon des ballades souls. Quant à un « Rock Me Baby » emprunté au répertoire de B.B. King, elle est l’occasion, pour Steve Cropper, d’enregistrer ce qui reste sans nul doute comme son plus définitif solo de guitare. Et citer la version du « You Don’t Miss Your Water » de William Bell (tout le monde a chanté cela, jusqu’aux Byrds) serait finalement injuste pour les chansons restantes. Car, merveilleusement épaulé par Booker T. & the MG’s, Isaac Hayes et les cuivres des Mar-Keys, Redding s’impose tout du long comme un chanteur au riche nuancier, et comme la figure tutélaire du genre.
Otis Blue : Otis Redding Sings Soul atteignit la première place des classements de vente de musique noire, et, en 1966, la 75ème position des hit parades pop. « Respect », « Shake » et « I’ve Been Loving You Too Long », exploités en singles, seront tous trois des tubes. Cet album reste essentiel dans une discothèque raisonnée.
