En 2000, la France et l’Europe découvrent la voix de Dido sur le titre « Stan » d’Eminem. Le rappeur, conquis par sa voix, a samplé le refrain de « Thank You », issu de No Angel. (Pour l’anecdote, Dido joue également la petite amie dans le clip.)
Cet album sorti aux Etats-Unis en 1999 est alors inconnu en Europe. Après le succès du duo, le label Arista Records choisit de le diffuser en Europe. L’Europe redécouvre donc en 2001 « Thank You » dans sa version originale mais d’autres titres encore, « Here with me » et « Hunter » qui deviennent eux aussi des tubes.
La voix cristalline et les modulations de la chanteuse font donc leur apparition dans le monde musical européen. Son timbre se rapproche étonnamment de ceux de Sarah Mc Lachlan et Sinéad O’Connor. Longtemps critiquée pour cela, Dido a toujours été ravie de la comparaison.
La pop de No Angel toute infusée de l’influence du trip-hop, souligne merveilleusement la voix douce, flottante et mélancolique de Dido. Ballades mid-tempo avec guitare acoustique et cordes (« Here With Me ») ou chansons plus éthérées et ambiantes aux sonorités synthétiques (« My Lover’s Gone ») : la thématique amoureuse y est explorée avec une délicatesse plaisante.
No Angel connaît un énorme succès et dépasse en 2008 les 12 millions d’exemplaires écoulés dans le monde. Il vaut à la chanteuse – outre la pluie de disques d’or, de diamant et de platine – toute une collection de récompenses aux NRJ, MTV et Brit Awards en 2001 et 2002.
