Avec leur duo Blue Lab Beats, NK-OK (Namali Kwaten) et Mr DM (David Mrakpor) auscultent la planète et luttent en sons et en rimes ! Après plusieurs EP et déjà deux albums, le tandem londonien escalade toujours et encore l’Everest du groove par toutes ses faces. Groove des anciens (Herbie Hancock et Roy Ayers pour le jazz-fusion, A Tribe Called Quest et J Dilla pour le hip-hop), mood ultra-urbain qui rappelle parfois la scène acid jazz anglaise des 90's, furie afrobeat (le titre Motherland Journey renferme carrément un sample de la voix de Fela Kuti sur Everything Scatter) et effluves électroniques. Une approche à 360° qui peut parfois dérouter mais garde un axe rythmique ultra-solide. NK-OK et Mr DM ont convié à leur orgie des noms qui buzzent (la star de la scène afrobeat ghanéenne Ghetto Boy, les nouvelles voix fortes de la néo-soul et du R&B londonien comme Ego Ella May, Pip Millet et Tiana Major9…) et glissent aussi quelques instrumentaux pour montrer leur virtuosité. En 2020, Blue Lab Beats avait brillamment revisité le Montara du vibraphoniste Bobby Hutcherson sur la compilation Blue Note Re:imagined.
