Véritable monument patriotique polonais, Le Manoir hanté (Strasny Dwor) est un chef-d’œuvre national tellement subversif qu’il a été censuré par l’occupant russe après trois représentations à Varsovie en 1865. L’argument de cet opéra est compliqué et la musique est constituée d’une sorte d’assemblage d’influences très variées, Offenbach et le grand opéra à la française tout comme la musique de Carl Maria von Weber. L’opéra de Moniuszko s’inspire de plusieurs sources littéraires. Selon Piotr Kaminski, Le Manoir hanté représente « la célébration du passé idéalisé et des vertus nationales, non dépourvue d’ironie cinglante, de nostalgie et d’amertume, sur fond d’une belle intrigue amoureuse et politique ».
Enregistré à Gdansk en mai 2018, ce nouvel enregistrement est le fruit du travail passionné des artistes et des élèves de l’Académie de Musique Stanislaw Moniuszko qui voulait honorer ses soixante-dix années d’existence. Cette université d’art d’État coopère étroitement avec plus de soixante établissements européens dans le cadre du programme Erasmus.
