Publié en 1993 et succédant à The Low End Theory (1991), Midnight Marauders constitue le troisième opus studio de la formation rap new-yorkaise A Tribe Called Quest et voit Q-Tip et Phife Dawg croiser le fer au fil d'une collection de quatorze nouveaux titres (amendés dans l'édition européenne du "Hot Sex" issu de la bande originale de Boomerang) évoluant en terres jazz rap d'une efficacité rarement égalée et concoctés par le groupe derrière Ali Shaheed Muhammad et une poignée d'invités dont Professor Large ("Keep it Rollin'"). Par ailleurs porté par des titres comme "Electric Relaxation" ou "Award Tour" en compagnie de Trugoy (De La Soul), Midnight Marauders compte non seulement parmi les hauts faits du groupe mais également parmi les grands classiques de l'âge d'or du hip-hop.

A Tribe Called Quest, old school is the new school

Il y a 30 ans paraissait "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm". Sans chaînes en or, sans flingues et sans ego trip, les New-Yorkais d’A Tribe Called Quest chamboulaient, dès ce premier album, l’histoire du rap en élevant le genre spirituellement et en allant puiser leurs samples dans l’univers du jazz.

La nu soul en 10 albums

Au milieu des 90’s, alors que le hip-hop vit son âge d’or, la soul entame aussi sa révolution. Avec Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Jill Scott et quelques autres, le genre retrouve la classe, la sobriété et le raffinement qui animaient les albums de Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield ou Roberta Flack. Après les années de règne du R&B sirupeux ultra-commercial, la nu soul, nettement plus underground, ravive la flame de la soul originelle, dans ses arrangements comme dans ses textes. Un mouvement bref mais hautement influent.

Le reggaeton en 10 albums

Mélange de dancehall jamaïcain, de hip-hop américain, de rythmes caribéens et de tchatche en espagnol, le reggaeton a, depuis sa naissance dans les années 90, donné plusieurs coups de butoir pour forcer la porte de la pop music. Des premières mixtapes de DJ Playero au “Barrio Fino” de Daddy Yankee, en passant par le “Tra-Tra-Tra” de Don Chezina, les musiciens de Porto Rico et leur succursale colombienne de Medellin ont tout tenté pour conquérir le monde et y sont parvenus dans la dernière décennie à travers Luis Fonsi, J. Balvin ou Bad Bunny. Retour en 10 albums sur l’histoire d’un genre qui n’a pas fini d’être populaire.
