Comme l'indique son titre, c'est à une chevauchée fantastique qu'invite Kings of Leon avec son sixième album Mechanical Bull (le « taureau mécanique » pour s'essayer au rodéo) dont la pochette à l'enseigne lumineuse et nocturne délivre d'emblée son parfum d'Amérique fantasmée ou...artificielle.
Le contenu est à l'avenant qui exploite la grosse ficelle d'un rock lourd, solidement appuyé sur son assise rythmique, porté par le chant éraillé et plaintif du chef de la fratrie Followill. Le groupe qui publiait son premier album dix ans auparavant n'est pas attendu pour faire bouger les lignes mais renvoyer sa part d'excitation et d'enthousiasme, ce qui fait cruellement défaut à Mechanical Bull qui enchaîne les boulettes avec régularité, de la grossière tentative de décalque du tube « Use Somebody » sur « Supersoaker » (dont la cavalcade de guitare en intro promettait mieux) aux ballades fatiguées façon « Beautiful War » et blues formaté, mécanique, à la « Rock City ». Les frangins touchent même le fond avec l'insipide « Temple ».
Sans grande originalité, Mechanical Bull ne se hisse à aucun moment au niveau des glorieux Youth & Young Manhood et Only By the Night. Il n'en délivre pas moins ici ou là quelques feux d'artifice du samedi soir dans le solo électrocuté de « Don't Matter » et les accords malins dont le groupe a fait sa spécialité, comme ceux, suspendus, de « Wait for Me ». Toutefois, il manque l'étincelle de créativité qui pourrait faire décoller l'album et, accessoirement, faire rebondir et sursauter l'auditeur de son siège.
