Ce deuxième effort de la jeune merveille de Chicago s’est construit cette fois sans l’ombre tutélaire de Jay-Z, mais avec la même équipe de producteurs peu connus mais affûtés, dont les fidèles Soundtrack. Avec la présence en featuring de Snoop Dogg sur un titre, de la chanteuse Nikki Jean sur le single « Hip Hop Saved My Life » et de son poulain, le rocker Matthew Santos.
C’est un disque plus sombre que le précédent, marqué par la mort de son père, et d’un ami proche, et l’envoi en prison (pour 44 ans) d’un autre ami, par ailleurs co-producteur exécutif de The Cool. L’album est une façon de concept album, où le jeune expert en story telling utilise deux personnages récurrents pour décrire les situations. On est définitivement loin de l’ordinaire du rap américain, nombriliste et hâbleur, qui ne voit pas plus loin que l’argent, la violence et le matérialisme.
Lupe Fiasco, avec son flow fluide, n’a pas peur de prendre à rebrousse poil son public, par exemple en s’adjoignant le concours de rockers patentés, comme Patrick Stump de Fall Out Boy, ou Matthew Santos. Il en résulte un album personnel, hors des formats et des clichés inhérents au genre, qui sont par ailleurs l’une de ses cibles de choix. On remarque encore le single extrait « Paris, Tokyo », dont le remix s’enorgueillit des présences de Pharrell Williams et Q-Tip. Tout est dit, la filiation est assurée, et le rap intelligent est encore vivant.
