Slow Hand n’a jamais masqué son admiration pour J.J. Cale. C’est pourquoi, durant sa tournée mondiale de 2007, Eric Clapton décide d’inviter son idole sur scène. Ensemble, ils jouent cinq chansons sur seize dont évidemment Cocaine et After Midnight, que l’Anglais avait reprises. Cela fait suite à la collaboration entre les deux artistes pour l’album The Road To Escondito (2006). C’est en plein milieu de Valley Center, dans le comté de San Diego, que le concert à lieu. Et, en plus de la star locale n’est pas la seule à venir se dégourdir les doigts puisque Derek Trucks du Allman Brothers Band ou Robert Cray épaulent God sur quelques titres. Clapton lui-même a avoué que sa dernière ambition  était de monter sur scène avec le guitariste californien. Alors que ce dernier est mort en 2013, le virtuose britannique a souhaité lui rendre un dernier hommage à travers Live In San Diego. © AR/Qobuz

J.J. Cale, le blues pépouze

Plus de cinq ans après sa mort, impossible de ne pas se ressourcer régulièrement auprès de la musique de J.J. Cale. Avec son alliage atypique de blues, folk, country et jazz, celui que vénérait Clapton et qui passa une partie de sa vie dans un mobil-home reste encore aujourd’hui l’un des ermites les plus influents du rock.
