C’est avant tout une sensation de sincérité absolue qui se dégage de cet enregistrement live de Katie Melua, laquelle est due entre autres à la teneur autobiographique de l’ensemble. Enregistré en décembre 2018 au Westminster Central Hall de Londres, l’album s’ouvre avec un chant traditionnel de Géorgie (son pays d’origine), Tu Ase Turpa Ikavi, avant de poursuivre avec Plane Song, dans laquelle la chanteuse décrit son arrivée en Irlande du Nord (son pays d’adoption), en 1993. En l’espace de quelques minutes, Katie Melua parvient à dessiner son parcours avec une émotion non feinte. Accompagnée simplement d’une guitare, d’un piano et d’une discrète section rythmique, la chanteuse a ici toute la liberté de mettre en valeur sa voix de velours, mais aussi la qualité d’écriture de ses chansons à la croisée de la pop et de la musique folk.

Si on retrouve bien entendu des incontournables comme Nine Million Bicycles et The Closest Thing to Crazy, le concert réserve aussi quelques surprises, comme la reprise de Just Like Heaven de Cure ou bien celle de What a Wonderful World. En ralentissant le tempo de la chanson de Louis Armstrong et en s’octroyant les services du Gori Women’s Choir (lequel figure dans beaucoup d’autres chansons de l’album), Katie Melua installe une atmosphère recueillie dans cette salle londonienne. Toujours dans le registre des reprises, citons le vibrant All-Night Vigil - Nunc Dimittis (chant religieux russe composé par Sergei Rachmaninoff en 1915) ou bien Fields of Gold de Sting. Katie Melua aime les grands écarts musicaux mais grâce à sa voix habitée et à sa sensibilité rayonnante, elle parvient à apporter une unité dans ce concert à l’atmosphère magique. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

1984-1987 : la métamorphose de George Michael

Au milieu des années 1980, alors qu’il est au faîte de sa gloire avec Wham!, George Michael décide de se lancer dans une carrière solo qui fera de lui une star planétaire, avec des tubes comme “Faith” ou “Freedom’ 90”. Au moment où sort le documentaire “George Michael Freedom Uncut”, qui raconte son parcours, Qobuz revient sur la “métamorphose” du chanteur anglais.

Tango : La revanche du Sud

Produit d’un métissage culturel où fleurit la géniale intuition de musiciens, poètes et danseurs, le tango devint un langage populaire au singulier raffinement, aussi identifié géographiquement que cosmopolite par essence. Sans cesse en mouvement au cours des décennies et de ses mutations, il produisit des artistes majeurs reconnus autour du monde. Aujourd’hui, il connecte des traditions centenaires avec la sono mondiale, dans une étonnante polychromie : de Gardel à Piazzolla et de Borges à Benjamin Biolay.

Guns N' Roses : la faim justifie les moyens

Alors que le mythique “Appetite for Destruction” se rapproche des 20 millions d'exemplaires vendus aux États-Unis, qui se souvient aujourd'hui qu'il a bien failli ne jamais voir le jour ? Non seulement les liens qui unissaient Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin et Steven Adler étaient fragiles, mais le destin s'acharnait sur cette formation qui semblait avoir trois métros de retard sur Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Cinderella ou Dokken. C'était presque par charité que David Geffen avait accepté d'héberger ce groupe SDF sur son label. Il n'aura pas à regretter son altruisme…
