Presque 20 ans que Dan et Pat rappellent à tous le mode d’emploi du rock’n’roll. Un tous qui les inclut. Une décennie après avoir quitté leur Akron natal de l’Ohio pour Nashville, les Black Keys accouchent de Let’s Rock, sorte de retour à la source d’un rock originel dans les veines duquel le sang blues est en ébullition. C'est donc logiquement que la guitare électrique y est célébrée de la première à la dernière minute. Le titre de l’album ne ment pas… Pour que le couple ait encore des choses à se dire, les infidélités ont été acceptées. Dan Auerbach a monté le label Easy Eye Sound, du nom de son studio de Nashville, sortant son second album solo, Waiting on a Song, et produisant une belle brochette d’albums signés Yola, Shannon & The Clams, Dee White, Sonny Smith, Robert Finley et autres Gibson Brothers. De son côté, Pat Carney a produit et enregistré de la musique avec Calvin Johnson, Michelle Branch, Tobias Jesso Jr., Jessy Wilson, Tennis, Repeat Repeat, Wild Belle, Sad Planets, Turbo Fruits et quelques autres. Et pour Netflix enfin, il a signé la BO de BoJack Horseman. De quoi stimuler leurs retrouvailles. « Cette période m’a permis d’y voir plus clair », précise Auerbach. « Et ça rend ces retrouvailles avec Pat encore plus agréables, juste grâce à cette longue coupure. Ce disque est le testament de cette sensation. »
Dans les oreilles, Let’s Rock passe en revue tous les bons gros sons de guitares 70's vénérés par le tandem. Une vaste palette allant de Glenn Schwartz et Joe Walsh du James Gang à Billy Gibbons de ZZ Top, en passant par Stealers Wheel (Sit Around and Miss You ressemble énormément à Stuck in the Middle With You), T. Rex, Link Wray (période Polydor), Blue Öyster Cult et quelques autres. « Je ne voulais pas qu’on réfléchisse trop, ajoute Auerbach. Il fallait qu’on sente de la spontanéité. Je voulais être capable d’enregistrer quelque chose proche de Louie Louie en étant satisfait avec ça. Voilà, je cherchais les Troggs ! » « Moi c’était plutôt Down on the Street des Stooges que je visais », corrige Carney qui insiste sur son amour pour les « bonnes grosses chansons bien débiles ». « Ce sont mes préférées ! Et sur cet album, Dan et moi sommes arrivés à ce que nous voulions atteindre. Je jouais de la guitare électrique depuis un an dans mon studio et, pour la première fois depuis longtemps, lui en jouait aussi beaucoup. Le disque est donc une sorte d’hommage à cet instrument… On a adopté une approche simple et surtout éliminé tout le gras comme on le faisait auparavant. » Reste alors le filet ; l’essentiel en quelque sorte… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
