Les extra-terrestres sont finalement légions dans l’histoire de la musique populaire du XXe siècle. Certains sont pourtant encore plus extra-terrestre que d’autres… Lee Hazlewood est évidemment l’un de ces hors-la-loi de la norme et du classement. Ses fans le savent bien, quant aux autres, si le nom du moustachu évoque vaguement quelque chose c’est souvent exclusivement le tandem que le bonhomme forma avec Nancy Sinatra et l’écriture et la production du mythique These Boots Are Made For Walking… Hazlewwod est pourtant bien plus que ça. Un compositeur, chanteur (cette voix de baryton insurpassable !), musicien, arrangeur et producteur brassant des influences multiples. Entre ses doigts, la pop plongeait dans la démesure des grands espaces et du cinémascope, la country devenait quasiment baroque et le rock se transformait en drame de chaque instant. Ce démentiel coffret de quatre CD conçu par Light In The Attic – l’un des meilleurs labels de réédition – rassemble tout ce que cette sorte de cousin éloigné de Phil Spector a mis en boite pour son propre label LHI entre 1966 et 1971. Ses albums solo bien entendu mais aussi des titres conçus pour tous ses poulains plus ou moins obscures voire oubliés (de la boombastique Ann-Margret à l’ex-Motown Barbara Randolph en passant par l’International Submarine Band du tout jeune Gram Parsons) que Lee Hazlewood a produit avec soin et, souvent, un certain génie. Au final, un trip unique dans un no man’s land magique et merveilleux de l’histoire de la pop music.
