Le succès de The Head On the Door a donné une grande liberté artistique au groupe de Robert Smith qui en profite en enregistrant ce double album, ambitieux, réussi et (une fois de plus) immensément populaire.
Plaire avec le même disque aux esthètes européen et au grand public américain (n°35 du classement du Billboard) : que rêver de mieux ? The Cure est alors sur un nuage, tout ce qu’il touche se transforme en or. Ce « nouveau » groupe en est vraiment un : ses membres cosignent pour la première fois toutes les musiques (Smith se réserve toujours les textes), ils s’amusent ensemble et ça s’entend.
Cet album de 18 titres, riche et chatoyant, enregistré en France dans une certaine sérénité, est une réussite artistique et commerciale (n°6 en Angleterre), à l’image de ses singles les plus connus, « Why Can’t I Be You ? » et « Just Like Heaven » (le premier du groupe à se classer dans le fameux Top 40 du Billboard, à la… 40ème position). Ce dernier titre magnifique, réussissant l’exploit pop ultime d’être à la fois triste et entraînant, est l’un des plus populaires du groupe en France, puisque sa version instrumentale (enregistrée un an avant l’album) était à l’époque l’indicatif du générique de la fameuse émission télévisée Les Enfants du rock.

Chronique
Le succès de The Head On the Door a donné une grande liberté artistique au groupe de Robert Smith qui en profite en enregistrant ce double album, ambitieux, réussi et (une fois de plus) immensément populaire.
Plaire avec le même disque aux esthètes européen et au grand public américain (n°35 du classement du Billboard) : que rêver de mieux ? The Cure est alors sur un nuage, tout ce qu’il touche se transforme en or. Ce « nouveau » groupe en est vraiment un : ses membres cosignent pour la première fois toutes les musiques (Smith se réserve toujours les textes), ils s’amusent ensemble et ça s’entend.
Cet album de 18 titres, riche et chatoyant, enregistré en France dans une certaine sérénité, est une réussite artistique et commerciale (n°6 en Angleterre), à l’image de ses singles les plus connus, « Why Can’t I Be You ? » et « Just Like Heaven » (le premier du groupe à se classer dans le fameux Top 40 du Billboard, à la… 40ème position). Ce dernier titre magnifique, réussissant l’exploit pop ultime d’être à la fois triste et entraînant, est l’un des plus populaires du groupe en France, puisque sa version instrumentale (enregistrée un an avant l’album) était à l’époque l’indicatif du générique de la fameuse émission télévisée Les Enfants du rock.
