Guitariste adulé par Jimi Hendrix, chanteur au falsetto dément vénéré par Prince, auteur engagé dans l’Amérique de la lutte pour les droits civiques et songwriter de haute volée, Curtis Mayfield a signé des grandes symphonies groovy et lancé de solides ponts entre funk, jazz, blues, tradition gospel et soul en cinémascope. Après s’être fait un nom au sein des Impressions durant les 60's, il se lance en solo en 1970. Ce coffret Keep On Keeping On réunit donc, en version remasterisée, ses quatre premiers albums studio : Curtis (1970), Roots (1971), Back to the World (1973) et Sweet Exorcist (1974). Avec eux, le rhythm’n’blues trouve une seconde jeunesse, poussé par une guitare wah-wah, des percussions judicieuses et une section de cordes toujours aérienne. Chaque thème est une minitragédie, socialement engagée, ancrée dans la tradition gospel. Et les arrangements magistraux de ces disques (surtout Curtis, son chef-d’œuvre, et Roots) sont des pendants au What’s Going On de Marvin Gaye.
