La deuxième moitié des 70’s est une période prolifique pour Bob Marley, alors au faîte de sa gloire, durant laquelle il envahit les bacs au rythme d’un album par an. Après Rastaman Vibration en 1976, Exodus en 1977, le Jamaïcain sort en mars 1978 ce Kaya, dont les titres sont issus des mêmes sessions qu’Exodus, effectuées lors des premiers mois de son exil londonien début 77. L’album est largement considéré comme son disque le plus léger, sans doute à cause de son thème, Kaya signifiant marijuana en argot jamaïcain. Le disque débute d’ailleurs par le “Excuse me while I light my spliff ” d’Easy Skanking, comme si Marley assumait le côté B-side de ces chansons. Mais on aurait tort de sous-estimer la machine à hits qu’étaient les Wailers, puisque l’album contient deux des tubes les plus populaires de leur discographie, Is This Love et Satisfy My Soul – il sera certifié double platine en France et disque d’or aux USA.
Bob Marley profita aussi de ses sessions pour revisiter sa période Lee Perry, avec d’abord le morceau-titre Kaya, pour une version ciselée sans la délirante guitare flamenco de Scratch, comme un symbole de l’influence d’Island – au détriment du romantisme diront certains… –, tandis que Sun Is Shining, plus éthéré que l’original, prend de l’envergure et du piquant avec la guitare électrique de Junior Marvin. Sur la face B de l’époque, on trouvait également She’s Gone, une chanson d’amoureux éconduit, Crisis, qui ressemble à un spin-off né d’une répétition d’Is This Love, ou le “rastaman chant” Time Will Tell, rythmé par le tambour nyabinghi. Le disque se conclut de manière pince-sans-rire avec Smile Jamaica, titre composé en vue du concert du même nom du 5 décembre 1976, au National Heroes Park de Kingston en Jamaïque, auquel Bob Marley avait participé deux jours après s’être fait tirer dessus… © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
