La Cantata Memoria du compositeur gallois Karl Jenkins (* 1944) commémore le trentième anniversaire de la tragédie d’Aberfan, lorsque le 21 octobre 1966, 144 personnes, dont 116 enfants, périrent écrasés sous la coulée d’un pan de terril dans un village minier du Pays de Galles. Jenkins est un grand tenant du « crossover » : il fut longtemps membre du groupe de rock progessif Soft Machine, on lui connaît nombre de bandes-son pour la publicité, ce qui ne l’empêche pas d’avoir étudié à la Royal Academy de Londres, de détenir un doctorat en musique de l’Université du Pays de Galles, de se produire en concert à la tête de chœurs et avec des solistes « classiques » de premier plan. On ne s’étonnera donc pas que le style et le genre de la Cantata Memoria surfe allègrement sur diverses eaux, sans toutefois jamais s’approcher du rock : on imaginerait plutôt une sorte de Mendelssohn moderne, très trempé de modalismes à l’ancienne et d’une harmonie très classique. Après tout, c’est un ouvrage destiné au « grand public », quand bien même avec des moyens d’ampleur considérable et issus du monde classique. Vous y entendrez d’ailleurs rien moins que Bryn Terfel dans quelques numéros, et plusieurs chœurs d’adultes et d’enfants gallois. C’est le compositeur qui dirige lui-même son ouvrage. © SM/Qobuz
