Dans sa conception, ce coffret de 119 titres est un document essentiel à la compréhension du cas Joni Mitchell. Comme son compatriote Neil Young avec sa série Archives, la Canadienne a chronologiquement réuni ici ses premiers enregistrements, pour la plupart inédits et datant d’avant son premier album de 1968, Song to a Seagull : démos, captations live et émissions de radio entre 1963 et 1967, tous de bonne qualité sonore. C’est évidemment sa période la plus purement folk qui est concernée par ce premier volume, elle qui a toujours détesté cette étiquette de folkeuse. Joni Mitchell est à part, d’abord dans les reprises de classiques comme House of the Rising Sun, Nancy Whiskey ou le mythique Dark As A Dungeon de Merle Travis où elle déploie déjà son originalité, parfois armée d’un simple ukulélé. Sa voix cristalline est aussi l’aimant puissant qui la démarque de ses consœurs de l’époque. Par la suite, dans ses propres compositions qu’elle joue là-aussi avec une singularité fascinante (elle passe son temps à s’accorder), le style Joni Mitchell se dessine au tournant d’une phrase à la poésie jamais ampoulée ou d’une mélodie quasi-impressionniste. Malgré tout, Archives – Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963 - 1967) s’adresse aux aficionados d’une artiste qui atteindra le vrai sommet de son art sur ses albums futurs comme Ladies of the Canyon (1970) et Blue (1971).
