Les seules cordes dans la musique de Johnny Cash, ce sont celles de sa guitare. Au milieu des années 50, dans les studios Sun à Memphis, il invente son style en coinçant un billet de banque entre les cordes et le haut du manche. Quand il joue avec ses deux compères Luther Perkins et Marshall Grant, le son est étouffé, percussif, boom chicka booom, l’histoire en marche. Ensuite, Cash va rarement abuser des cordes d’orchestre – violon, violoncelle. Il en met un peu sur Forty Shades of Green en 1961, on en entend sur la version live de Sunday Morning Coming Down en 1970… Quand il veut enluminer ses chansons d’arrangements, il fait plutôt chanter la Carter Family qui l’accompagne. Et pour les cuivres, ce seront des trompettes mariachis sur Ring of Fire. Adepte de la sobriété, vestimentaire comme musicale, Johnny Cash n’a jamais cédé à l’embourgeoisement d’enregistrer avec un orchestre symphonique. Ça, c’était de son vivant. Car dix-sept ans après sa mort, ses descendants et son label historique (Columbia) exhument 12 chansons pour les embaumer d’arrangements joués par le Royal Philharmonic Orchestra de Londres – qui s’est déjà fait remarquer ces dernières années en jouant notamment le répertoire d’Elvis Presley, Queen ou Pink Floyd. La dimension épique était déjà présente dans la voix imposante de Johnny Cash. La voici amplifiée et magnifiée par des cordes qui tournoient et des envolées de harpes. Dans le meilleur des cas, les arrangements encadrent les chansons et mettent en sourdine quand apparaît la voix de Cash.
