Après s’être déifié sur Yeezus en 2013, Kanye West est revenu au prêche en 2019, se donnant en spectacle chaque dimanche dans ses “Sunday Services”, des jam-sessions itinérantes en public durant lesquelles il revisitait ses tubes et ceux des autres (Drake, No Doubt et même Nirvana) à la sauce gospel. Jesus Is King est le point d’orgue de ce cheminement : un album concept de hip-hop d’église qui rappelle la singularité et surtout la liberté que s’octroie Kanye West à chaque disque sous son nom.
C’est le Sunday Service Choir, qui l’accompagne chaque dimanche, qui donne le ton d’un album multipliant les références gospel, avec notamment un sample de Can You Lose by Following God de Whole Truth, superbe morceau de spiritual soul made in Memphis, qui rythme l’entêtant Follow God. L’album contient quelques coups de génie, comme le mystique et déjà mythique Selah, et le minimaliste Use This Gospel, featuring Clipse et Kenny G, qui tourne d’abord sur une seule corde vibrant sur deux notes, puis un accord plaqué sur un orgue, suivi d’un saxophone qui vient gicler sur la dernière minute et enfin la batterie qui rentre avant 20 dernières secondes avec toutes les pistes ensemble.
Alors que sur Hands On, avec le chanteur de gospel Fred Hammond, il interroge les critiques de la communauté chrétienne américaine, circonspecte quant aux intentions d’un homme qui s’est renommé Yeezus (“What have you been hearin' from the Christians ? / They'll be the first one to judge me”), on termine cette petite demi-heure de musique avec la reposante sensation d’avoir pu oublier le personnage pour mieux apprécier l’artiste. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
