Canadienne, lesbienne, crooneuse, country. Ce poker d'as réducteur est un bout de scotch qui colle aux doigts de KD Lang depuis des années. Extra-terrestre de la pop, sorte d'artiste culte qu'on chérit pour son intemporalité, pour l'atypisme justement de ses choix esthétiques, Kathryn Dawn Lang n'est pas uniquement le grigri des gens de goût, musicalement cultivés, le met qu'on ne peut apprécier que si l'on maîtrise des pans entiers de musique populaire américaine, de Nashville à Broadway. Au-dessus des genres donc… C'est pourtant en terre country que la chanteuse s'est faite un nom à la fin des années 80, d’abord en reprenant les standards popularisés par la grande Patsy Cline. Attitude androgyne, arrangements léchés et voix soyeuse, Nashville conjugué par KD Lang n'est pas un défilé de cowboys de chez Disney. Chez la Canadienne, la pedal steel, instrument cher au genre, est impressionniste. Quant à son organe, il se love davantage dans la soie d'une mélancolie propre aux crooners que dans les yodles des garçons vachers. Un peu comme chez son idole Roy Orbison, avec qui elle eut la chance de croiser le micro alors qu'elle n'avait que 26 ans. Toutes ces singularités sont au cœur d’Ingénue qu’elle publie en mars 1992. Un superbe deuxième album qui réunit tous les éléments de son cabaret très personnel et qui brille sur des chansons comme Constant Craving, Miss Chatelaine et The Mind Of Love. Un disque hautement raffiné qui souffle ses 25 bougies dans une édition remastérisée agrémentée de huit titres inédits extraits d’un MTV Unplugged enregistré par KD Lang en 1993 à New York. © MZ/Qobuz
