Le disque ultime de rupture ! La bible des cœurs brisés ! Ce neuvième album studio de Sinatra qui parait au printemps 1955 chez Capitol est considéré, encore aujourd’hui, comme la bande son la plus parfaite des êtres tourmentés. Le crooner sait évidemment de quoi il cause, le début des années 50 ayant été pour lui on ne peut plus chaotique sentimentalement parlant, tiraillé qu’il fut entre ses deux femmes, Nancy Barbato et Ava Gardner… L’ambiance est donc logiquement on ne peut plus mélancolique tout au long de ce pur chef d’œuvre, et sa voix de velours jongle avec des thèmes aussi joyeux que la solitude, l’introspection, les amours perdus, la dépression et les errances nocturnes… A cet égard, In The Wee Small Hours fut un peu le premier album concept. Pour confectionner l’écrin idéal à cet océan de turpitudes, Nelson Riddle et son orchestre font des merveilles de subtilité. Les arrangements sont d’une classe folle et les violons sont manipulés à la perfection. Dans une veine similaire, Frankie signera en 1958 le tout aussi fabuleux Sings For Only The Lonely. Sa virtuosité dans le swing était inégalée, dans la tourmente elle est tout aussi bluffante. Bref, un chef-d’œuvre qui rendrait presque heureux de s’être fait plaquer… © MZ/Qobuz
