L’après Beatles avait déjà démarré sur les chapeaux de roue pour Lennon avec un premier album solo magistral concocté avec madame (John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band). Le niveau reste ici très élevé avec cet Imagine dont le single qui donne son titre au disque est – doux euphémisme – entré dans la légende, devenant un véritable hymne pacifiste indémodable. Le Liverpuldien prouve à nouveau qu’il sait tout faire : ballades poignantes (Jealous Guy), textes hautement poétiques, rêves éveillés pop et rock’n’roll furieux et carrés (It’s So Hard, I Don’t Wanna Be A Soldier, Gimme Some Truth). Il trouve même le temps d’attaquer en frontal son ex-camarade Paul McCartney sur le cinglant How Do You Sleep.
