Après l’observateur juvénile et le magnat mafieux, il fallait un nouveau défi pour Nas à l’aube de son troisième album. Devenu égérie d’un rap sans concession mondialisé, à la fois héritier de Rakim et Whodini, Nas était autant adulé que décrié pour ses choix et ses positions. Sa carrière entre dans un moment de trouble après l’échec commercial et critique de son groupe The Firm, son embrouille avec Cormega qui était sa principale influence et caution rue ainsi que sa collaboration peu fructueuse avec Dr. Dre en pleine reconstruction. Avec ce nouvel album très attendu, Nas veut s’imposer comme ce génie que tout le monde encense. Maintes fois repoussé et remodelé, I Am… est un des premiers albums à souffrir énormément du piratage et des leakssuccessifs. Pour devenir ce qu’il aurait dû être, Nas joue la provocation ultime, en pharaon sur la pochette et en martyr christique avec Puff Daddy, grand démon du rap commercial de l’époque, sur le controversé Hate Me Now.
Pourtant, en invitant les légendes Scarface, DMX ou Aaliyah, il survit à l’hécatombe des icônes du moment, rendant hommage à 2pac et Biggie sur We Will Survive. Portant la croix pour son mouvement, Nas se perd parfois dans un costume trop grand pour lui, toujours avec la mise en musique clinquante des Trackmasters et LES. Mais il reprend aussi des bonnes habitudes face à ces contradictions, notamment avec DJ Premier sur les emblématiques N.Y. State of Mind part II et surtout Nas Is Like.
