Ce huitième album de The National se distingue par de petits grains de sable bienvenus dans la mécanique huilée du groupe américain, à commencer par la présence de nombreuses chanteuses venues apporter leur soutien au leader Matt Berninger sur la plupart des morceaux. On retiendra notamment la performance de Gail Ann Dorsey (bassiste de David Bowie) sur You Had Your Soul With You, ainsi que celles, particulièrement habitées, de Lisa Hannigan et Mina Tindle sur, respectivement, So Far So Fast et le très émouvant Oblivions. Pourquoi cette présence féminine soudaine au sein d’un groupe exclusivement masculin ? Sans doute parce que l’album est né après que le cinéaste Mike Mills a proposé à The National d’illustrer en chansons son moyen-métrage I Am Easy to find, qui se trouve être le portrait d’une femme. C’est donc le rapport aux images qui a mis un coup de pied dans la fourmilière de la pop du groupe de Brooklyn. On note par ailleurs, ici ou là, quelques références à certains classiques du cinéma, en particulier à Roman Holiday de William Wyler (1953).
Mais à part ces quelques nouveautés cinématographico-féminines, les admirateurs de The National retrouveront la mélancolie légendaire du groupe, à la fois dans les textes et la musique. On retiendra notamment la présence de nappes de cordes déchirantes sur tous les morceaux (seule exception : les violons staccato de Where Is Her Head), ainsi qu’un piano introspectif récurrent (en particulier dans le très beau Light Years). Quant à la rythmique si singulière de Bryan Devendorf, elle joue sur les contrastes puisqu’on trouve ici de percutantes saccades (Rylan, The Pull of You), ou là un toucher sensuel (Hairpin Turns, I Am Easy to Find). © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

Descriptif de l'album
Ce huitième album de The National se distingue par de petits grains de sable bienvenus dans la mécanique huilée du groupe américain, à commencer par la présence de nombreuses chanteuses venues apporter leur soutien au leader Matt Berninger sur la plupart des morceaux. On retiendra notamment la performance de Gail Ann Dorsey (bassiste de David Bowie) sur You Had Your Soul With You, ainsi que celles, particulièrement habitées, de Lisa Hannigan et Mina Tindle sur, respectivement, So Far So Fast et le très émouvant Oblivions. Pourquoi cette présence féminine soudaine au sein d’un groupe exclusivement masculin ? Sans doute parce que l’album est né après que le cinéaste Mike Mills a proposé à The National d’illustrer en chansons son moyen-métrage I Am Easy to find, qui se trouve être le portrait d’une femme. C’est donc le rapport aux images qui a mis un coup de pied dans la fourmilière de la pop du groupe de Brooklyn. On note par ailleurs, ici ou là, quelques références à certains classiques du cinéma, en particulier à Roman Holiday de William Wyler (1953).
Mais à part ces quelques nouveautés cinématographico-féminines, les admirateurs de The National retrouveront la mélancolie légendaire du groupe, à la fois dans les textes et la musique. On retiendra notamment la présence de nappes de cordes déchirantes sur tous les morceaux (seule exception : les violons staccato de Where Is Her Head), ainsi qu’un piano introspectif récurrent (en particulier dans le très beau Light Years). Quant à la rythmique si singulière de Bryan Devendorf, elle joue sur les contrastes puisqu’on trouve ici de percutantes saccades (Rylan, The Pull of You), ou là un toucher sensuel (Hairpin Turns, I Am Easy to Find). © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
