Stephan Eicher retrouve ses origines yéniches avec cet album de rock balkanique qui bénéficie de la couleur singulière de Traktorkestar, une jeune fanfare de Berne. Ces neuf cuivres et trois batteurs apportent une touche à la fois énergique et poétique à ce patchwork qui comprend quelques chansons inédites, mais surtout de nombreuses reprises. Parmi les relectures les plus flamboyantes des tubes du ténébreux chanteur suisse, citons Envolées et Louanges. La première est arrangée pour l’occasion par Goran Bregovic, rencontré en 2012. Déjeuner en paix brille par son absence, mais on retrouvera deux autres très grands succès des années 1990 : Combien de temps et Pas d’ami (comme toi). A côté de ces morceaux incontournables, les fans de la première heure auront le plaisir d’entendre Les Filles du Limmatquai (sorte de #MeToo avant l’heure) et la splendide Chanson bleue, toutes deux provenant de la période new wave du chanteur, au début des années 1980.
Cette énergie poétique pourrait aussi être appelée « mélancolie festive » car les paroles souvent désenchantées ou tendres de Philippe Djian contrastent bien souvent avec les rythmes effrénés des chansons, et leur caractère foncièrement dansant (Cendrillon après minuit notamment est à des années-lumière de l’arrangement d’origine dû à Benjamin Biolay). Quant à la pochette de Hüh !, elle témoigne elle aussi d’un sentiment mélangé puisque derrière les confettis colorés qui la composent, on peut y voir une référence émouvante à la pochette de Fantaisie militaire d’Alain Bashung.
