Bien que décriée par certains critiques qui voient en elle une imitatrice de Billie Holiday, Madeleine Peyroux a sa propre approche de la chanson. Les comparaisons avec Lady Day sont à propos, et son interprétation enjouée, mélancolique du jazz et blues a un côté vintage, mais ses albums sont suffisamment dotés d'un style contemporain pour les rendre originaux. Half the Perfect World (2006), par exemple, est très agréable à écouter du début à la fin. Qu'elle apporte sa touche élégante, intime à des gros succès du moment tels que "Everybody's Talkin'" de Fred Neil et "The Heart of Saturday Night" de Tom Waits ou qu'elle chante ses propres chansons, Madeleine Peyroux livre une prestation magnifique et travaillée sur Half the Perfect World. Cet album est un véritable bijou, à la fois doux et envoûtant.
