On ne compte plus les compilations de Toto, d’autant qu’elles reprennent plus ou moins la même sélection. Depuis l’album Toto IV, véritable hold-up de 1982, avec ses deux hits mondiaux, Rosanna et Africa, et une pluie de récompenses (pas moins de six Grammy Awards), le groupe qui rassemblait quelques-uns des plus efficaces requins de studio de la planète a traversé bien des épreuves sans jamais rééditer l’exploit. Mais il n’a pas démérité pour autant. Pour preuve, ce Greatest Hits : 40 Trips Around the Sun est essentiellement destiné à accompagner une nouvelle grande tournée mondiale qui célébrera le quarantième anniversaire de la sortie du premier album, Toto. Si la créativité du groupe s’était réellement arrêtée il y a trente-six ans, il ne déplacerait certainement plus autant les foules aujourd’hui. Outre Rosanna, c’est sans surprise que l’on retrouve quelques-uns de ces prénoms qui se finissent en “a” (une pure coïncidence, jure Lukather), avec ici Pamela et Léa (il manque Angela, Manuela Run, Holyanna ou Mushanga). 

Même si le quatorzième album se fait attendre, les “survivants” du groupe se sont tout de même retrouvés en studio pour enregistrer ou compléter trois morceaux inédits, Spanish Sea, Alone et Struck by Lightning. Les bases de la première remontent à la préparation de The Seventh One, en 1988, ce qui permet de retrouver les regrettés Jeff Porcaro à la batterie et son frère Mike à la basse, dans un style très proche d’Africa. Le plus pop Alone ne dépareillerait pas sur Toto IV, même si c’est Joseph Williams, arrivé en 1986 et revenu en 2010, qui assure le chant, comme sur le plus nerveux Struck by Lightning.
