Les bandes mères EMI de Maria Callas — rapidement numérisées pour les besoins du CD, il y a plus de 25 ans, avec force applications de filtres pour camoufler les défauts sonores (distorsions ou autres) — sont passées dans les mains expertes des techniciens d’Abbey Road pour nous rendre aujourd’hui, sous étiquette Warner Classics, des enregistrements au plus proche de leur son originel. Le gain sonore est indéniable, que ce soit par la suppression des bruits parasites ou le traitement des sons saturés sans pour autant altérer les sons harmoniques naturels. De plus, cette décision de remastériser tout Callas a permis de retrouver des masters qu’on croyait disparus — perte désastreuse ayant entraîné des copies de copies…



Mais qui dit plus grande définition et propreté du son dit meilleure perception des détails, en bonne ou mauvaise part. Si l’on discerne plus nettement les nuances, les écarts de dynamique, les plans sonores et que l’on gagne plus de fidélité dans les timbres, on entend davantage tous les défauts ; pour la Callas, si sa voix semble plus dramatique, plus lumineuse, plus présente, et son phrasé plus magnifique encore, elle se dévoile en même temps dans sa vérité, avec son acidité, ses fêlures. Grâce à un son fidèlement rajeuni, des enregistrements comme La Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Le Trouvère, Le Barbier de Séville…, entre autres, apparaissent comme jamais irremplaçables.

Le gain sonore est indéniable, que ce soit par la suppression des bruits parasites ou le traitement des sons saturés sans pour autant altérer les sons harmoniques naturels. De plus, cette décision de remastériser tout Callas a permis de retrouver des masters qu’on croyait disparus — perte désastreuse ayant entraîné des copies de copies…



Mais qui dit plus grande définition et propreté du son dit meilleure perception des détails, en bonne ou mauvaise part. Si l’on discerne plus nettement les nuances, les écarts de dynamique, les plans sonores et que l’on gagne plus de fidélité dans les timbres, on entend davantage tous les défauts ; pour la Callas, si sa voix semble plus dramatique, plus lumineuse, plus présente, et son phrasé plus magnifique encore, elle se dévoile en même temps dans sa vérité, avec son acidité, ses fêlures. Grâce à un son fidèlement rajeuni, des enregistrements comme La Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Le Trouvère, Le Barbier de Séville…, entre autres, apparaissent comme jamais irremplaçables.

Maria Callas "dal vivo"

D’une portée vertigineuse, le legs discographique de Maria Callas est d’autant plus stupéfiant que ses gravures d’opéras en studio se firent en à peine une décennie : pas moins de vingt-quatre intégrales enregistrées entre 1952 et 1960 (mais la plupart dans les années 1953–1957), complétées à Paris, où elle venait de s’installer, de Carmen (1964) et d’une seconde Tosca (1965) — aux intégrales répondant de célèbres disques récitals. L’ensemble a fait l’objet en 2014, au terme d’une remasterisation exemplaire d’après les bandes mères, d’un nouveau et somptueux coffret Warner Classics. Nous reproduisons ici, avec l'aimable autorisation de Warner Music le texte introductif de Michel Roubinet qui figure dans le livret du coffret Maria Callas Live.

Basé sur un fait divers survenu en France pendant la Terreur révolutionnaire (l’histoire d’une jeune femme intrépide se déguisant en homme pour tenter de sauver son mari emprisonné au fond d’un cachot), l’unique opéra de Beethoven a connu une destinée mouvementée, remanié de part et d’autre au fil des années. Nouvelle preuve du génie musical du compositeur allemand, “Fidelio” lui a aussi permis de mettre en musique un livret répondant à ses opinions politiques.
