Désormais propulsée au statut de star du baroque, la claveciniste devenue chef, Emmanuelle Haïm, enchaîne les succès. Son nouvel enregistrement de l’archi-célèbre et archi-enregistré Messie de Haendel entrera sans doute dans la catégorie des succès en question ; naturellement, de nos jours, on enregistre l’une des versions originales — Dublin 1742 ou Londres 1743 —, et non plus les mammouths concoctés au XIXe siècle avec grand orchestre philharmonique tels que les livraient les orchestres jusque dans les années 50 — les versions les plus explosives étant alors celle de Ebenezer Prout et celle d’Eugene Goossens, carrément berliozienne. Emmanuelle Haïm fait appel non pas à une contralto mais à un contreténor, Tim Mead en l’occurrence, pour les interventions d’alto. Le chœur est maintenu à une taille réservée, le Concert d’Astrée joue sur instruments d’époque selon les techniques du temps, mais avec un swing et une vivacité de tous les instants. Serait-ce là une nouvelle « version de référence » ? (MT)

" Tim Mead cumule toutes les qualités du "contre-ténor" anglais" (idiomatisme, voix diaphane) sans en avoir les défauts (manque d'homogénéité des registres, préciosité). Christopher Purves, on s'en serait douté, excelle dans "The trumpet shall sound" : autorité, force de caractère, tout y est. Chronique

Désormais propulsée au statut de star du baroque, la claveciniste devenue chef, Emmanuelle Haïm, enchaîne les succès. Son nouvel enregistrement de l’archi-célèbre et archi-enregistré Messie de Haendel entrera sans doute dans la catégorie des succès en question ; naturellement, de nos jours, on enregistre l’une des versions originales — Dublin 1742 ou Londres 1743 —, et non plus les mammouths concoctés au XIXe siècle avec grand orchestre philharmonique tels que les livraient les orchestres jusque dans les années 50 — les versions les plus explosives étant alors celle de Ebenezer Prout et celle d’Eugene Goossens, carrément berliozienne. Emmanuelle Haïm fait appel non pas à une contralto mais à un contreténor, Tim Mead en l’occurrence, pour les interventions d’alto. Le chœur est maintenu à une taille réservée, le Concert d’Astrée joue sur instruments d’époque selon les techniques du temps, mais avec un swing et une vivacité de tous les instants. Serait-ce là une nouvelle « version de référence » ? (MT)

" Tim Mead cumule toutes les qualités du "contre-ténor" anglais" (idiomatisme, voix diaphane) sans en avoir les défauts (manque d'homogénéité des registres, préciosité). Christopher Purves, on s'en serait douté, excelle dans "The trumpet shall sound" : autorité, force de caractère, tout y est. La grande gagnante est bien sûr Emmanuelle Haïm, qui réalise un travail d'orfèvre à la tête de son Concert d'Astrée. " (Classica, décembre 2014 / Jérémie Bigorie)
