On ne pourra pas reprocher à Brad Mehldau de se reposer sur ses lauriers ou de tourner en rond. Avec Finding Gabriel, le pianiste américain signe un album ambitieux et protéiforme qui fait voler en éclats les habituelles frontières du jazz. En 2014 déjà, il avait signé avec le batteur Mark Guiliana un disque ovni, Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, dont cette cuvée 2019 est une sorte de prolongement en bien plus dense. Surtout, Finding Gabriel est venu après sa lecture intensive de la Bible ; d’où cette référence à l’archange Gabriel dans le titre… « J'ai construit beaucoup de morceaux en commençant avec des synthés et Mark Guiliana à la batterie. Selon un processus similaire à celui de Taming the Dragon. Des couches ont été ajoutées et la voix humaine est devenue un élément important, sans les paroles, mais en tant qu’expression pure d’harmonie et d’émotion. »
Déroutant de prime abord, le résultat, évidemment mystique, est fascinant et surtout foisonnant d’idées. Derrière son piano, ses synthés (dont le Dave Smith / Tom Oberheim OB-6), son Fender Rhodes, des percussions mais également – une première ! – le micro, Mehldau déroule une symphonie de vents, de cordes et d’électronique flirtant avec le jazz-fusion (on pense parfois au Pat Metheny Group ou à Weather Report) et dans laquelle la voix humaine occupe une place essentielle. Le pianiste américain n’est d’ailleurs pas le seul à chanter puisqu’il a convié notamment Kurt Elling, Becca Stevens et Gabriel Kahane. Enfin, toujours côté invités, la violoniste Sara Caswell, le trompettiste Ambrose Akinmusire, les saxophonistes Joel Frahm, Charles Pillow et Chris Cheek et le flûtiste Michael Thomas sont de la partie.
