Indissociable du courant afrobeat, Tony Allen semble être sur terre pour perpétuer à l’infini un style musical dont il est l’un des géniteurs majeurs. A 74 ans passés, celui qui fut LE batteur de Fela publie ce nouvel album solo qui certes lui ressemble mais qui ose aussi se confronter aux sons actuels. Car même si ce bien nommé Film Of Life renferme toutes les valeurs de l’afrobeat, il embarque aussi l’auditeur vers des terres inédites, comme sur ce Go Back, superbe ballade touchante composée avec Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz). Il y a du jazz, du blues et surtout une large et superbe palettes de rythmes variés et sophistiqués qui font de ce disque un objet sonore fascinant, qui ne se contente jamais de servir une énième soupe afrobeat revivaliste mais tente au contraire de faire entrer dans le troisième millénaire, ce genre musical qui brilla surtout durant les années 70. © MD/Qobuz
