Obscur et lumineux. Comme une cave sur la Côte d’Azur. C’est là que la bande de Jagger et Richards – fuite fiscale oblige – a mis en boîte le gargantuesque Exile on Main Street, festin de toute une vie où les plats sont country (Sweet Black Angel, Sweet Virginia), gospel (Shine a Light), blues (Shake Your Hips) et viscéralement rock’n’roll (le Rocks Off d’ouverture ou le cultissime Happy braillé par Keith Richards). Les Rolling Stones ont beau être au sommet de leur gloire et du star-system, ce chef-d’œuvre est sculpté dans la tripe, sombre et sale côté son, sincère et brut côté style. Rarement les musiques roots américaines (country, blues, folk) n’auront été conjuguées avec autant d’originalité. Jagger chante comme un gourou habité. Richards taille des riffs de guitare plus sublimes et tranchants les uns que les autres. « Si le but du punk était de se débarrasser des hippies, le nôtre est d’en finir avec le grunge. » Lorsque Damon Albarn assène cette phrase en 1993, l’Angleterre s’apprête à reprendre sa place sur un échiquier musical envahi par Seattle avec le grunge et Nirvana. Profondément liée à la vie politique et l’identité locale, la pop britannique se révèle au moment où Tony Blair et le New Labour entrent en scène. Le romantisme anglais redevient attractif par rapport à l’identité américaine, jugée trop creuse outre-Manche. Place à la « Cool Britannia ».

Objectif Lune : The Dark Side of the Moon

Album phare dans la discographie de Pink Floyd, “The Dark Side of the Moon” est le fruit d’une élaboration relativement lente qui remonte pratiquement à 1968. “A Saucerful of Secrets” (le morceau phare de l’album éponyme) en est, pour Nick Mason, le point de départ. Derrière, “Ummagumma” laissait s’exprimer des personnalités qu’il allait falloir amalgamer pour décrocher la timbale. Pink Floyd poursuivit sa quête du disque idéal avec “Meddle”, sur lequel le groupe accentuait sa maîtrise du travail du studio, et “Atom Heart Mother”, avant d’atteindre le nirvana avec “The Dark Side of the Moon”, dont la perfection ne s’est jamais érodée.
