Dire que Damon Albarn sait tout faire est un doux euphémisme… Un rapide coup d’œil au CV du bonhomme impressionne : leader des essentiels Blur et de l’épatant Gorillaz, instigateur de passionnants projets ovni comme The Good, The Bad & The Queen (avec le maître de la batterie afrobeat Tony Allen, l’ex-Clash Paul Simonon et Simon Tong, guitariste de The Verve) et Rocket Juice & The Moon (avec Flea des Red Hot Chili Peppers et à nouveau Tony Allen), sideman pour des musiciens maliens (superbe Mali Music), auteur d’opéras pop (Monkey: Journey To The West), co-directeur artistique d’un label de réédition (Honest Jon’s Records) et ainsi de suite… A 46 ans pourtant, le Londonien a enfin trouvé le temps (et l’envie ?) de signer son premier vrai album solo. La copie rendue intitulée Everyday Robots offre logiquement l’atypisme de tous ses travaux passés. Ainsi, le Damon Albarn de Blur côtoie notamment celui de ses fréquentations « world » voire de Gorillaz. Doté d’une plume exquise qui n’est pas sans rappeler celle de son aîné Ray Davies des Kinks (un de ses modèles), il embarque ici son écriture sur des sentiers mélancoliques, parfois même nostalgiques. Un piano nonchalant percute un beat minimaliste hypnotique, une mélodie pop virginale s’adosse à une chorale et, dans son ensemble, Albarn joue la carte de l’épure, histoire de donner plus de force à sa prose et même à sa voix. Conçu en étroite collaboration avec Richard Russell, patron du label XL, ce beau disque, souvent troublant et étonnant, accueille Brian Eno et Natasha Khan du groupe Bat For Lashes… Pas de doute, Damon Albarn sait vraiment tout faire. - © MZ/Qobuz
