Codes and Keys . Il s’agit déjà du septième album studio du groupe américain, dont le premier disque date de 1997. Que de chemin parcouru depuis les premières démos du jeune Benjamin Gibbard ! Un sentier de la gloire rondement abordé par la tête pensante de Death Cab for Cutie, et pourtant moins évident qu’il en a l’air. En effet, comment passer d’un label indépendant à une maison de disque dite major sans perdre totalement sa crédibilité rock indie ? En signant chez Atlantic pour Plans , en 2005, Death Cab for Cutie s’est conforté dans l’écrin pop qui lui seyait le plus, sans pour autant renoncer à l’inventivité de sa musique.
Codes and Keys ne faillit pas à la règle. Les volutes électronisantes de « Home is a Fire » se chargent de le prouver dès les premières notes du disque, avant que la cohérence - impressionnante - du disque se fasse sentir au fil des morceaux. Se savourent les violons dandys du titre éponyme, étrangement familiers, puis le twist de « You Are a Tourist » . Vient ensuite le piano lunaire de « Unobstructed Views » , ou celui, plus joyeusement pop, de « Portable Television » . Enfin, le pop-rock relevé de « Underneath the Sycamore » ou les très élégants synthétiseurs de « St Peter’s Cathedral » achèvent de convaincre l’auditeur. Le tout surmonté du chant à la fois pénétrant et vaporeux de Ben Gibbard, qui sauve, il faut l’avouer, d’une possible fadeur les morceaux de Codes and Keys .
En ornant sa pochette d’une des touches de clavier d’ordinateur bien connue des utilisateurs assidus de réseaux sociaux, Death Cab for Cutie fait sans doute preuve d’ironie. Les chiens aboient, la caravane du quatuor américain passe, tranquillement. Nul besoin d’en faire trois tonnes, Gibbard a foi en ses compositions, toujours solides, douées d’une vraie intelligence de la mélodie. Certains lui reprocheront de travailler de trop près ses morceaux, de ne laisser que peu de place à la spontanéité - quelle importance ?
Qu’importe le flacon, pourvu qu’on ait l’ivresse de la pop, celle qu’affectionne Ben Gibbard : classique, parfois lisse, transfigurée de piano, de guitares, d’éclairs électroniques. Bref, une pop classieuse.
