David Fray's 2017 release on Erato is an exploration of the poetic aspects of Frédéric Chopin's music, as expressed through a selection of nocturnes, mazurkas, and other quiet character pieces. This music is often interpreted introspectively, suggesting that it is best played close to the vest, despite the outward show of bel canto ornamentation in the melodies and occasional outbursts of intense pianistic virtuosity. Fray opens his program with one of the most famous of all piano pieces, the Nocturne in E flat major, Op. 9, No. 2, which establishes the reflective nature of the album, and the gentle mood continues, winding through such reveries as the Mazurka in C sharp minor, Op. 63, No. 3, the Polonaise-Fantaisie in A flat major, Op. 61, the Impromptu in G flat major, Op. 51, No. 3, and the Mazurka in F minor, Op. 63, No. 2, which are among the most popular of Chopin's works. To be sure, when the music builds to impassioned climaxes, Fray is assertive and powerful, demonstrating that Chopin's poetic side can be as bold as it is refined. Erato's sound is clear and fairly close to the piano, so every note is audible and the church acoustics of Our Lady of Lebanon of Paris are adequately resonant without blurring the music.
