Premier album chez Island et lancement de la carrière internationale pour Bob Marley avec un son considéré comme du reggae « anglais », un mélange de basse et de rythmiques jamaïcaines face à une guitare plus rock.
La version « deluxe » sortie en 2001 contient les morceaux originaux encore plus roots. Et pourtant le disque dont la pochette originale était en forme de briquet Zippo débute sur un reggae lent mené par la ligne puissante de Family Man qui donne le ton pour la suite. « Concrete jungle » dévoile des paroles sombres, brûlantes de la fièvre des ghettos de Kingston. Les neuf titres enregistrés en stéréo, contrairement à la production de l'île à l'époque, sont d'une rare densité. Bob Marley en signe sept et Peter Tosh deux dont « 400 years » sur le thème de l'esclavage.
Le groupe fonctionne encore avec ses trois chanteurs, le lead généralement assuré par Bob Marley est donc soutenu par les choeurs de Peter Tosh et Bunny Livingstone. Le métis prend toute sa mesure sur « Kinky reggae » où il laisse aller sa voix dans des envolées heureuses. Le morceau qui restera dans les mémoires est « Stir it up », mais le disque offre aussi l'excellent « No more trouble », hymne pacifiste que les Wailers aimeront enchaîner à la suite de « War » en concert en s'appuyant sur ses puissants breaks.
