Après une premier album en forme de mise en condition, Lionel Richie atteint indéniablement le sommet de son art avec Can’t Slow Down. Si les points de comparaison avec Thriller (1982) restent ténus, le succès planétaire de Michael Jackson semble avoir bien inspiré un Lionel Richie s’apprêtant à composer et enregistrer ce disque (entre mars et septembre 1983).
A l’instar de son ami, cadet de dix ans et ex-camarade de label, Lionel Richie fait le pas qui le sépare d’une grande notoriété dans son milieu au statut de méga-star tout public, Can’t Slow Down se vendant à dix millions d’exemplaires lors de sa sortie. Autre similitude dans le contenu, la quasi-totalité de l’album se retrouve dans les meilleures places des classements, avec en l’occurrence, cinq titres sur les huit compositions que totalise cet opus.
La comparaison peut s’arrêter là. Autant Thriller est doté d’une dynamique époustouflante, l’album de l’ex-Commodores reste dans un tempo plus sage, conforme à la personnalité de son auteur. Le plus enlevé des titres, le funky « All Night Long (All Night) » – qui en est le plus grand succès – est célèbre pour son pont calypso, comme « Wanna Be Startin’ Something » de Jackson empruntait au standard de Manu Dibango, « Soul Makossa ». Le clip mis en scène par Mike Nesmith (ex-Monkees) est aussi connu pour sa chorégraphie à la manière de.
« Running With The Night », l’autre chanson au tempo enlevé mise à part, Richie ne peut ralentir le rythme. « Love Will Find A Way » et « Stuck On You » groovent à minima, le reste du disque est donc composé de ballades langoureuses, notamment avec son précédent n°1 « Truly » inclus pour capitaliser, et le slow suprême « Hello » (…is it me you’re looking for ?), pilier des boums de l’époque.
Numéro un toutes catégories confondues, Can’t Slow Down est certifié Disque de diamant en 1984, remportant le Grammy Award « Album de l’année », et plaçant cinq titres au sommet des charts. L’impressionnant casting de musiciens réuni à cette occasion sembla donc un excellent choix, avec David Cochran et Greg Phillinganes (partenaires réguliers aux arrangements et claviers), David Foster (production), Darryl Jones (guitares), Paulinho Da Costa et Abraham Laboriel (percussions), et les Toto Steve Lukather et Jeff Porcaro.
