The music of Johannes Brahms, especially his symphonic works, represents a culmination of the conservative romantic style and is a cornerstone of any musician or collector's repertoire. There is a plentiful diversity of recordings on the market large enough to suit nearly every taste, ranging from Herbert von Karajan's notoriously weighty and romantic golden-age accounts to the so-called "authentic" performances of Sir Charles Mackerras released in the late '90s. Approximately halfway in (but perhaps with his taste in honoring repeats gently nudging the Mackerras side), Marek Janowski and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic are featured on this four-disc set of performances that includes the four symphonies, the overtures, and the Haydn Variations. The steep competition already makes this compendium a tough sell; the good if mediocre performances make it nearly impossible. Even though the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has never sounded better and Janowski seems to have difficulties controlling tempi throughout. The motoric inner pulse of Brahms, evident in both his harmony and notated rhythm, often feels unsteady in Janowski's control: he seems to encourage momentum in places that need stasis, and places that require restraint seem to have none. These rhythmic issues not only create tension for the listener, but the orchestra as well; there are noticeable problems with ensemble throughout, especially during Brahms' more stirring, syncopated passages. Janowski carefully draws the middle line as far as most stylistic issues are concerned: his sound is thicker than most of the authentic readings that have become popular in the twenty first century, though not nearly as lugubrious as some of the German-tradition recordings from the mid-1900s. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, despite the circumstances, performs well overall; however, as can be heard in the opening bars of the Symphony No. 3, the brass section at times performs overzealously, resulting in both mistakes and music that seem completely out of character. Even though the sound on these Resonance discs is uniformly excellent, there are many better options for securing your own collection of these priceless works: Carlos Kleiber is unsurpassed for both the Second and Fourth symphonies, and Claudio Abbado's First and Third almost fill in the remainder of Kleiber's unfortunate recorded absence.

Martha Argerich, l'indomptable pianiste
