Le Chineke! Orchestra est une idée de Chi-Chi Nwanoku, fameuse contrebassiste anglaise d’origine nigériane et irlandaise, qui, en discutant avec Ed Vaizey, alors ministre de la Culture, lui fit remarquer qu’elle était souvent l’une des seules personnes de couleur sur scène lors des concerts symphoniques. Ainsi naquit, en 2015, le concept du Chineke! Orchestra, qui rassemble une majorité de musiciens noirs, asiatiques et d’autres minorités ethniques généralement gommées de la photo sur la scène classique. Un orchestre militant donc, et c’est logiquement qu’après Dvořák, Sibelius et Rachmaninov chez Signum Classics, il s’associe à… Tuff Gong, le label fondé par Bob Marley, pour un disque de reprises de l’icône jamaïcaine.
La genèse du projet remonte à 2018, quand le violoncelliste Sheku Kanneh-Mason, membre du Chineke! et starifié sur les réseaux sociaux depuis son concert au mariage du prince Harry, reprend No Woman No Cry de manière éclatante sur son album Inspiration. La famille Marley, touchée, décide de poursuivre l’expérience avec cet album sur lequel l’ensemble rejoue et réarrange dix classiques de Bob autour de ses a capella empruntés chez Island. Alors évidemment, tout le côté raw a disparu – même la voix de Bob semble plus douce par moments – mais ce travail souligne encore une fois la dimension pop de la musique des Wailers, en plus de montrer la filiation de cet orchestre particulier avec une personnalité aussi artistique que politique. “Je crois ardemment que tous les genres de musique devraient être ouverts à tout le monde donc c’était magnifique pour Chineke! de pouvoir apporter de nouvelles orchestrations à ces titres iconiques”, conclut Chi-Chi Nwanoku. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Le Chineke! Orchestra est une idée de Chi-Chi Nwanoku, fameuse contrebassiste anglaise d’origine nigériane et irlandaise, qui, en discutant avec Ed Vaizey, alors ministre de la Culture, lui fit remarquer qu’elle était souvent l’une des seules personnes de couleur sur scène lors des concerts symphoniques. Ainsi naquit, en 2015, le concept du Chineke! Orchestra, qui rassemble une majorité de musiciens noirs, asiatiques et d’autres minorités ethniques généralement gommées de la photo sur la scène classique. Un orchestre militant donc, et c’est logiquement qu’après Dvořák, Sibelius et Rachmaninov chez Signum Classics, il s’associe à… Tuff Gong, le label fondé par Bob Marley, pour un disque de reprises de l’icône jamaïcaine.
La genèse du projet remonte à 2018, quand le violoncelliste Sheku Kanneh-Mason, membre du Chineke! et starifié sur les réseaux sociaux depuis son concert au mariage du prince Harry, reprend No Woman No Cry de manière éclatante sur son album Inspiration. La famille Marley, touchée, décide de poursuivre l’expérience avec cet album sur lequel l’ensemble rejoue et réarrange dix classiques de Bob autour de ses a capella empruntés chez Island. Alors évidemment, tout le côté raw a disparu – même la voix de Bob semble plus douce par moments – mais ce travail souligne encore une fois la dimension pop de la musique des Wailers, en plus de montrer la filiation de cet orchestre particulier avec une personnalité aussi artistique que politique. “Je crois ardemment que tous les genres de musique devraient être ouverts à tout le monde donc c’était magnifique pour Chineke! de pouvoir apporter de nouvelles orchestrations à ces titres iconiques”, conclut Chi-Chi Nwanoku. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
