Grand saxophoniste alto d’origine indienne, né à Trieste en Italie mais ayant quasiment passé toute sa vie aux États-Unis, Rudresh Mahanthappa mêle, avec originalité, éléments propres à la tradition musicale du sud de l’Inde et jazz contemporain. Cette fois, la célébration de sa cuvée 2015 est dans le titre : Bird Calls. C’est en effet l’héritage de Charlie Parker que le virtuose avant-gardiste magnifie ici. Une matière géniale qu’il s’approprie et intègre dans son univers si singulier et personnel. Épaulé par de brillants complices on ne peut plus inspirés (le tout jeune trompettiste de 20 ans Adam O'Farrill – fils d’Arturo O'Farrill, donc petit-fils de Chico O'Farrill –, le pianiste Matt Mitchell, le bassiste François Moutin et le batteur Rudy Royston), Mahanthappa signe un disque embarquant tradition et avant-garde dans des contrées fascinantes.
