La Deuxième Symphonie de Leonard Bernstein, « The Age of Anxiety », d’après le poème éponyme de W. H. Auden, est une œuvre de la relative jeunesse du compositeur-chef-d’orchestre, puisqu’elle date des années 1948-1949 – tout juste la trentaine donc. La symphonie se présente comme une suite de variations, mais non pas des variations à partir d’un thème initial. Non : chacune des variations reprend des éléments de la variation précédente, la varie à son tour, et ainsi de suite. On pourrait donc parler d’une forme de métamorphose ininterrompue. Comme on peut se l’imaginer, Bernstein mêle des éléments symphoniques classiques avec des éléments de jazz, en particulier dans la partie de piano solo – ici tenue par Krystian Zimerman, qui eut la chance de se produire maintes fois avec Bernstein. C’est à sa manière une sorte d’hommage pour le centenaire de la naissance du compositeur, d’autant que, selon ce qu’indique Zimerman dans le livret, Bernstein lui aurait demandé « s’il voulait bien jouer cette symphonie avec lui pour ses cent ans ».
